Writing

60 minutes

Two tasks. Task 1 requires you to describe, summarise, or explain visual information (graph, table, chart, diagram, or process). Task 2 is a discursive essay responding to an argument, point of view, or problem. Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1.

Speaking

A face-to-face interview with an examiner in three parts. Part 1 covers familiar topics about your life. Part 2 is a long turn where you speak for 1-2 minutes on a cue card topic. Part 3 involves a deeper discussion related to the Part 2 topic.

Maintain a "spelling error" log and review nightly. Listen to a 10-minute English podcast and summarise the key points.
Week 3	Reading — Foundational Strategies Reading	• Skimming for gist: reading topic sentences and concluding sentences to understand passage structure in under 3 minutes • Scanning for specific information: locating names, dates, numbers, and technical terms efficiently • True/False/Not Given: the evidence-based approach — distinguishing "not given" from "false" with confidence	Read two Academic passages under timed conditions (20 minutes each). For each wrong answer, write out the exact text evidence that supports the correct answer. Read one article from New Scientist or The Economist and note 10 new vocabulary items.
Week 4	Writing Task 1 — Graphs & Charts Writing	• Task 1 structure: paraphrased introduction, overview paragraph with key trends, detailed body paragraphs with data • Line graphs: language for trends (increased gradually, declined sharply, remained stable, reached a peak of) • Bar charts: comparing and contrasting categories, grouping data logically, approximating figures	Write two Task 1 reports: (1) line graph on population growth in three cities 1950-2050, (2) bar chart comparing water usage in six countries. Complete each in 20 minutes. Submit for teacher feedback.
Week 5	Writing Task 1 — Tables, Pies & Processes Writing	• Pie charts: describing proportions, making comparisons (accounted for, comprised, made up approximately) • Tables: selecting and grouping key data, avoiding a mechanical row-by-row description • Process and cycle diagrams: passive voice for stages, sequencing language (firstly, subsequently, at this point, finally)	Write three Task 1 reports: (1) pie chart on energy sources, (2) table on tourist arrivals by country, (3) process diagram on chocolate production. Week 7	Speaking — Parts 1 & 2 Speaking	• Part 1 mastery: expanding answers to 2-3 sentences naturally, using examples and personal anecdotes • Common Part 1 topics: hometown, accommodation, daily routine, hobbies, food, weather, music, reading, technology, transport • Part 2 cue card technique: one-minute brainstorm template, maintaining fluency for the full two minutes, natural sign-off phrases	Record four 2-minute Part 2 monologues: (1) Describe a city you would like to visit, (2) Describe a teacher who influenced you, (3) Describe an item of clothing you enjoy wearing, (4) Describe a time you received good news. Week 10	Reading — Advanced Question Types Reading	• Matching headings: skim-first and elimination approach for complex academic passages • Matching information to paragraphs: systematic paragraph annotation technique • Matching features: linking researchers, dates, or categories to statements in scientific and social science texts	Complete one full Reading test under strict 60-minute timing. For each passage, write a one-sentence summary. Review all wrong answers and categorise errors by question type.
