Listening

30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time

Four recorded conversations and monologues covering everyday social situations and educational/training contexts. Difficulty increases from Section 1 to Section 4. You hear each recording once only.

Reading

60 minutes

Three long reading passages taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. Texts are written for a non-specialist audience but deal with academic topics. At least one passage contains detailed logical argument.

Writing

60 minutes

Two tasks. Task 1 requires you to describe, summarise, or explain visual information (graph, table, chart, diagram, or process). Task 2 is a discursive essay responding to an argument, point of view, or problem. Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1.

Speaking

11-14 minutes

A face-to-face interview with an examiner in three parts. Part 1 covers familiar topics about your life. Part 2 is a long turn where you speak for 1-2 minutes on a cue card topic. Part 3 involves a deeper discussion related to the Part 2 topic.

  • Part 1: Personal questions on familiar topics (home, work, studies, hobbies)
  • Part 2: Individual long turn — describe a person, place, object, event, or experience
  • Part 3: Two-way discussion — abstract and analytical questions linked to Part 2 theme
