What's covered

Reading

Year 3: 45min / Year 5: 50min / Year 7: 65min / Year 9: 65min

Students read a variety of texts including narratives, informational texts, poetry, and persuasive texts, then answer questions testing comprehension, inference, vocabulary, and text structure understanding.

  • Multiple-choice comprehension questions
  • Identifying main idea and supporting details
  • Making inferences from text evidence
  • Understanding vocabulary in context

Writing

All years: 40min (plus 5min planning)

Students write a single extended response to a given prompt. The task alternates between persuasive and narrative writing each year. Responses are assessed on audience, text structure, ideas, persuasive devices, vocabulary, cohesion, paragraphing, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Persuasive writing: argument with reasons and evidence
  • Narrative writing: story with setting, characters, plot
  • Planning and organising ideas before writing
  • Using paragraphs and cohesive devices
  • Demonstrating vocabulary range and accuracy

Language Conventions

Year 3: 45min / Year 5: 45min / Year 7: 45min / Year 9: 45min

Students answer questions on spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Questions are presented in context, requiring students to identify errors, select correct forms, and demonstrate understanding of English language rules.

  • Spelling: identifying correct and incorrect spellings
  • Grammar: subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, pronoun reference
  • Punctuation: capitals, full stops, commas, apostrophes, quotation marks
  • Sentence structure: fragments, run-ons, and correct formation
